Over the last ten years and more “The Cloud” has become an increasingly significant part of global businesses IT strategy, thinking and architecture.  The hype around cloud computing would therefore seem to be justified, but is it?  Looking from the perspective of one major global business – the Pharmaceutical Industry – this talk will focus on some of the key drivers that make certain capabilities within Pharma more likely to embrace The Cloud, whilst making others more likely to shun the technology.  Understanding these contradictions, which often exist within the same organisation, let alone between different companies, should help informatics solution providers to be better able to position their products to meet customers' needs.  This will move cloud computing to a true, value-adding “plateau of productivity”.

Biography Richard Shute is an accomplished IS/IT strategic business relationship, account and portfolio manager, medicinal and peptide chemist. He has a number of patents and publications, and over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Previous roles at ICI and Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, and at AstraZeneca have included: IS/IT portfolio, strategic account and business relationship manager; IS/IT demand manager; IS/IT project and program manager; and principal medicinal chemist.  Richard’s first degree was in Pharmacy from the University of Nottingham (UK). His PhD was in semisynthetic beta-lactam antibiotics, also from Nottingham University, and he did postdoctoral research in peptide chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Richard joined Curlew Research as a consultant in early 2015.
